Board of Directors Meeting
November 1, 2011Present were Drs. Joe Hurd, Scott Morrison, John Thomas, Kathy DeFord, Gary Westerman, Dennis Anderson, Taryn Cheshire, Ben Hardy, Ken Hermsen, Stuart McNally, Diane Ochuba, , , , , Absent with notice were Gene Gaspard, Mike Hermsen, Stephanie Lake, Marty Matz and Holly Herman
1. Officer’s Reports
• Secretary: Dr. Kathy DeFord
A correction to the minutes of the October 4 board meeting was proposed and accepted. Kathy will change the Treasurer’s Report to read “Total revenues as of Sept 30.”• Trustee’s report: Dr. Marty Matz had no report (It was his birthday and he was not present at the meeting.)
• Treasurer’s report: Dr. Gary Westerman
As of October 31, Revenues were $20,538.31 and Expenditures were $19,767.62. See accompanying sheet for details. Gary would like to see revenues higher, as he will have to dip into money market account to pay budgeted expenses. Gary said we have not yet received the money from Carestream/Kodak who sponsored last month’s general membership meeting. We are expecting $500.• President’s report: Dr. Joe Hurd had nothing to report.
• ADA Delegate report: Drs. Scott Morrison and Ken Hermsen
• The $7 ADA dues increase was approved. The block grant survived, but at a reduced amount. $126,000 will be available. Holly and Gary need to contact the ADA to apply for block grant money for 2012.
• It was the first time the ADA passed a non-deficit budget in a long time.
• SPA, the State Public Affairs program was funded.
• State Exchanges meeting: David O’Dougherty, Deb West and Ed Vigna serve on the exchange committee.
• Ken went to CODA (Commission on Dental Accreditation) hearings. Strong objections were voiced to establishing standards for mid-level providers. Mid level provider programs are currently not CODA accredited. Opponents are saying they are a renegade program, and CODA recognition gives it a legitimacy. There was only one representative from CODA present at the meeting. The ADA hasn’t settled on its position on this issue. Stay tuned
• Joe asked how the state level is doing on this mid level provider issue. Ken: Jack was happy about how the meeting went last Friday. Hygienists were cooperative. After the meeting hygienists said they would like the task force to move forward with the proposal for the changes to the assistant duties. In return hygienists would like the dentists’ backing to pass LB 330. Their main issue is to reduce the number of hours of experience required for hygienists to practice independently in a public health settings, so there will be jobs available for new graduates. Dentists wanted to remain neutral in this issue but the House of Delegates voted against the reduction of hours. Nursing home lobbyist in favor of LB 330.
• The expanded duty assistants proposal is moving forward, system similar to the three-tiered positions proposed previously.
• There was a short discussion concerning what it takes to set up an educational program for mid-level providers. A school in Hays, Kansas would like to set up a program to train mid-level providers, and there are no guidelines and no dental facilities. Dr. John Thomas wondered if the state Board of Education needed to be involved in setting up new programs. And Dr. Taryn Cheshire wondered why CODA has not become involved.• The Officer’s Reports were approved.
2. Committee Reports
• Douglas County Board of Health Dr. Stuart McNally
The Douglas County Board of Health is looking into a credit card system for dental services, where patients pay for card, and the dentist agrees to accept the discounted fees.• Constitution and Bylaws Committee Dr. Marty Matz
The by-laws revisions are not finished.• Intra-professional Advisory Committee: Dr. Dennis Anderson
Dennis attended an advisory board meeting at the new hygiene facility at Iowa Western. The renovation looks nice. There is still some uncertainty about how to determine who will be accepted into the hygiene program. The administration has mandated there be no interviews, and the faculty are trying to come up with an accurate and fair screening process, aside from straight GPA. Some suggestions have been: Myers-Briggs testing, ACT or SAT scores, a written essay. Class size has expanded to 30 students. For CODA the hygiene program is supposed to provide evidence that there will be jobs available for graduates.Joe extended congratulations to Dennis’ election to the Board of Dentistry.
• Membership committee: Dr. Stuart McNally
The New Dentist party on November 3rd has 18 confirmed new dentists signed up, and 8 board members. The sponsor pulled out but we still had funding from the ADA to cover the expenses.• Necrology Committee: Dr. Diane Ochuba
Dr. David Hoffman died Oct 20, 2011. He served for 21 years in the US Air Force as a Periodontist. He moved to Omaha in 1979 and retired from the Air Force a few years later. He was in private practice until he retired in June of this year. Dr. Hoffman was a past president of the ODDS. Scott requested that, in lieu of a moment of silence at the general membership meeting, that we have a toast to David’s life. He was 73.• Nominations committee Dr. Scott Morrison
Nominations for NDA positions include: Dr. Carolyn Taggart-Burns as President elect. Board of Directors: Drs. Tyler Smith and Pat Burchfiel. One more candidate is needed; suggestions include Drs. Leslie Ehlen and Doug McKnight.• Programs and Activities Committee Dr. John Thomas
For our upcoming meeting for dentists and their assistants, 58 dentists and 30 assistants have reserved spots.3. Executive Director’s Report
Holly was absent but some items she wanted covered were:
• Place cards will be in place for all those with reservations for the general membership meeting. All should RSVP to Holly.
• United Republic Bank will be the sponsor for the general membership meeting.
• We received a thank you note from the Schneiders for a new baby gift book from the ODDS.
• Holly said we should invite anyone we choose to the New Member Party. We would like to have more people present.
• We need to set a date for Creighton’s sign up day. This time Holly would like to Invite seniors only.Old business Dr.Gary Westerman presented a financial policy for the ODDS. It was moved and approved that we should include the financial policy as an amendment to the by-laws, with a minor change in verbiage reflecting that it should be a goal, rather than a requirement to maintain an amount equivalent 50% of the Society’s annual expenditures in the reserve account. See handout for the exact details of the policy.
The next board meeting will be held on Wednesday January 4th.
Joe adjourned the meeting at 7:36 pm
Respectfully submitted,

The ODDS is working in collaboration with the Omaha Dental Assisting Society to foster and strengthen excellent relationships between the ODDS and the ODAS organizations. Dr. Hurd encouraged everyone to invite his or her Dental Assistant to attend this meeting to hear the speaker, Dr. Douglas Long, a neurosurgeon who will discuss Use of the Gamma Knife Technology in the treatment of patients with Head and Throat Cancer. Each member’s admission is paid with his or her dues, but members were asked to sponsor his or her Assistant's meal cost of $35.

• He welcomed dental students Patrick Watchter, Luke Sharp, Scott Radnicky, Mark Hermes and Ben Mancuso from Creighton.
• Dr McNally announced a possibility of a cut in the Student Grant funding from the American Dental Association. For several years, grants from the ADA have allowed the ODDS to pay for students to attend the general membership meetings to observe first hand the many benefits of membership. Stuart asked members to consider sponsoring one or more dental students. For about $100, a member could bring three students to ODDS.
• Dr. McNally announced the ODDS’ first New Member Party to be held on November 3 at the Upstream Brewing Company in West Omaha. The ODDS is inviting all new dentists who have received Nebraska dental licenses in the past two years ... and who may or may not be members of ODDS to join us for a beer tasting, in hopes they will see what fun and intelligent folks we are, and they will want to join ODDS.Announcement:
• Dr. Joe Hurd announced that our executive director Holly Herman has asked the members to notify her if their email or phone number or addresses change. About 10-20 percent of all emails she sends out to members each month are returned as undeliverable and it takes a lot of time to call and request updated information. We currently have 303 members in the ODDS, plus 33 Active Life members.Treasurer’s Report: Dr. Gary Westerman
• Revenues $15825.79

Those members on the Nominating Committee will help determine who will serve in leadership roles in the 2012-2013 program year. Those roles include the President-Elect, Board Members, and Delegates and Alternates to the NDA House.
• Dr. Hurd asked the ODDS membership to give some thought to serving on the ODDS Board or in representing ODDS as a Delegate or Alternate to the NDA House. If anyone would like to know what those responsibilities are -- and what the many benefits are, too -- they were encouraged to see our Executive Director Holly Herman for job descriptions.Necrology Committee: Dr. Diane Ochuba had no report.

• The NDA has been working hard on a new strategic plan concerning the scope of practice for dental assistants and hygienists. Please pass any thoughts along to the NDA delegates. Marty encouraged members to read the NDA e-newsletter and website.Community Dentistry: Dr. Julie Wees is not in attendance and will have a report for the membership at the next meeting.
• Dr. Hurd asked for volunteers to help with this committee. Dr. Stephanie Lake will be on the committee.
• Dr. Hurd announced we are looking for help at the Omaha Children's Museum Healthy Trick or Treat Nights scheduled for October 20 and October 27 from 5:00 - 7:30. Respectfully submitted,
Dr. Kathy DeFord, Secretary - October 2011 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes
ODDS Board Meeting
Oct 4, 20111. Welcome
Dr. Joe Hurd opened the meeting at 6:24 PM.2. Officer’s Reports
• Secretary/Approval of Minutes: There were two changes to the minutes requested: Changing the name “Stewart” to “Stuart”, and using “changing” board members instead of “retiring” board members. With those changes, the minutes were approved. Minutes from the last general membership meeting were approved.• Trustee’s Report: Dr. Marty Matz was not in attendance but he told Holly he will give a report on the HOD meeting at next week’s general membership meeting. The HOD meeting in Kearney went well. Ken Hermsen said everything concerning duties of dental auxiliaries is still in the task force stage, and out of this will come a proposal to take to the legislature. Jack would appreciate any input. Jack would like to resolve any differences with the NDA, NDHA and NDAA before the proposal reaches the legislature.
• Treasurer’s Report: Dr. Gary Westerman. The two major expenses are the monthly dinners for the general meeting, and Holly’s salary. We generally have about 100 in attendance at each general membership meeting, and the dinner bill is around $3500. Gary will bring a copy to the next board meeting of the ODDS financial policy concerning having a reserve of money, and how much. Total Revenues for the year ending June 30, 2011 were $15,825.79, and Total Expenditures were $12,329.78. The total fund balance was $78,293. For more details on the budget, see attached report.
• President’s Report: Dr. Joe Hurd said he got an e-mail from the NDA director saying we have too many delegates. We have 16 and are supposed to have 14. The nominating committee needs to select two fewer delegates, and designate others as alternates.
• ADA Delegate report: Dr. Scott Morrison reported on the 10th district caucus meeting in Sioux Falls. Ken Hermsen, Eric Hodge, Mark Hinrich and others were there. Discussion centered around the budget. There will most likely be a $7 dues increase. The new budgeting system is more efficient, more detailed. The ADA student bock grant will probably be eliminated in the future so we need to find alternate funding if we want to pay for students to play golf, etc. Ken reported, regarding the budget, if someone brings up a proposal, they have to also report on how it will financially impact the association. Scott said the raw numbers are up for ADA members, but the percentage representing all possible dentist members of ADA is down. There are an estimated 20 new dental schools likely to open over the next few years, including some that may have “fly-in” teachers brought in for 6 weeks or so to teach a certain subject. And there are other non-traditional teaching modes that are designed to save money..
3. Committee Reports
• Advocacy: Dr.Scott Morrison: The legislative council is revisiting the non-covered services law. Some insurance companies (Omni and Delta) are trying to get around the law by adding a fee to non-covered services. The legislative council is trying to not have to take the matter back to the legislature. They are trying to get insurance companies to not set fees for non-covered services. David O’Dougherty would like to know of any dentists having a problem with this issue.
• Douglas County Board of Health: Dr. Stuart McNally has no new news since the last meeting.
• Community Dentistry: Dr. Julie Wees, not present, is looking for two volunteers for Children’s Museum on Oct 20th and 27th from 5:15 - 8:30 Dr. Stephanie Lake volunteered to do the 20th. Ameritas will give us $2500 and 2000 toothbrushes.
• UNMC Public Health: Holly has a meeting with Ruti in two weeks. Ruti will let Holly know when they have events in which we can participate.
• Constitution and Bylaws: Dr. Marty Matz, not present, will meet with the committee on Oct 24th at Marty’s office, to finish up the by-laws. NDA’s new bylaws were ratified (first reading) and Ken doesn’t anticipate any significant changes.
• Intraprofessional Advisory Committee: Dr. Dennis Anderson, not present. He told Holly to thank everyone for supporting him in getting his seat on the board of dentistry.
• Membership Committee: Dr. Stuart McNally reported Terry Sullivan and Frank Driscoll have completed their Retired Dentist status affidavits. Holly clarified distinctions in types of members: Retired Members are those who have completed the ADA affidavit stating they are indeed retired (no part-time, casual, here or there filling in for a colleague) and are 65 years old or have reached 30 years of consecutive membership. Active Life Members pay half dues for the ADA and the NDA, but no ODDS dues. That is why we collect $35 from Active Life members who attend General Membership meetings. .
• Necrology Committee: Dr. Diane Ochuba reported that no dentists have died since the last meeting.
• Nominations Committee: Members are Drs. Greg Beals, Ben Hardy, Stephanie Lake, David Maixner, Steve Pryor.
• Programs and Activities for this year: Dr. John Thomas reported he had nothing to add to the agenda notes (see attached notes.) We discussed the conflict that two of the general meetings will be on same night as Creighton basketball home games. Board meeting in January will be changed from the 3rd to the 4th (Wednesday, not Tuesday). Holly will check with Anthony’s Steak House to see if we can change the nights for the two general meetings that fall on Creighton home game nights. We can ask the general membership if they want to change away from Creighton basketball. Holly will let us know if a change of dates would work.
4. Executive Director’s Report: Holly Herman
• Data: Holly has been updating a mailing list for the ODDS because she has been unable to get an accurate list from the NDA. She will categorize members according to type of member. Holly is most concerned about having an accurate list for mailing labels for the new dentist welcome party on Nov 3rd.
• New Dentist Party: DDS Dental lab will be sponsoring the event, a beer tasting party at Upstream Brewing Company in West Omaha, November 3rd, 5:30 -7 pm. The rep from DDS is a former meeting planner, now in sales. He has lots of good ideas on how to encourage attendance. He will donate $500. An ADA grant will contribute $880. Holly will invite those who have received Nebraska Dental licenses within the last couple of years. Each board member will be assigned to call five new dentists and invite them to the party. Holly will invite our major vendors, Diers, Schein and Patterson, and ask that they provide door prizes. Our goal is to have 70 people attend. The board members will call and invite the new dentists, meet them there. And Holly will follow up with everyone regarding joining ODDS/NDA/ADA within one week of the event.
• Sponsors: Dental Designs will sponsor our January meeting. United Republic Bank would like to sponsor the November meeting.
• November 8 Bring your assistant to dinner meeting: Members should make their reservations early because space is limited.
• Newsletter: Holly received a cost savings suggestion from Jody at the NDA who suggested putting the Chronicle in NDA newsletters going to ODDS members only.
• We need to remind general membership to update the ODDS on any e-mail changes.
• October 1 was the deadline for applying to host the ADA Annual Conference for New Dentists. Holly said the conference planners take care of speakers, etc. Local people would have to put up $20,000.00 to host the conference. There would be no revenue generated for the ODDS, but it would be a good way to promote the city of Omaha. Right now no one wants to step up to take charge of this, but maybe some of the new dentists would be interested in hosting in the future. .The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 PM. The next board meeting will be held November 1, same location, same time.
Attendance: Drs. Joe Hurd, Diane Ochuba, Gene Gaspard, John Thomas, Ben Hardy, Ken Hermsen, Mike Hermsen, Stuart McNally, Kathy DeFord, Gary Westerman, Stephanie Lake and Executive Director Holly Herman. Absent with notice: Dennis Anderson, Taryn Chesire, Marty Matz.

- 2011 May Board of Directors Meeting
1. Welcome
Dr. Scott Morrison opened the meeting and welcomed board members2.Officer’s reports
• Secretary’s report: Dr. Kathy DeFord
Scott requested the words “mid level provider task force” be changed to “Oral Health Task force”.
It was also suggested attendance be recorded. Kathy agreed to make these changes.• Treasurer’s report: Dr. Gary Westerman
We are still anticipating dues from the NDA and sponsorship revenue. Gary presented an account of the past 11 years of revenues, expenditures and differences. Except for 2008, we have been in the plus. In 2009 we began having sponsorships. Gary will examine where revenues have come from. Gary will work up a proposal for an official financial policy for August meeting. He mentioned he could use some help establishing this financial policy.• ADA Delegate Report: Dr. Scott Morrison
• ADA annual session will be held in Las Vegas this year. Delegates to the ADA are Drs. Scott Morrison, Mark Hinrichs and Ken Hermsen, with alternates Drs. Henry St. Germain, Scott Wieting and Eric Hodges.•Dr. Brett Thomsen would like to speak to the general membership at next week’s meeting about NMOM
3. Committee Reports
• Constitution and Bylaws Committee: Dr. Marty Matz
The committee worked through about half of constitution. The board reviewed changes made, not many of which were policy changes, but changes in wording. Board members will review it and comment on it individually. Board members should look particularly at the policy on annual dues increases. A comment was made that it should be in the constitution that proposed budgets and reserves should be balanced budgets, and then dues adjusted accordingly. Dues should be set according to what next years expenditures will be. Cost of dinners is going up. We will discuss dues policy at executive meeting.• Intra-Professional Advisory Committee: Dr. Dennis Anderson
We haven’t received the name of the recipient for the ODDS scholarship from Iowa Western, but will get the name as soon as they decide on it. Gary said they got thank you’s from Metro students. Dennis and others wrote to the administration of Iowa Western and petitioned in favor of keeping the interview process for considering applicants for the hygiene program. Dennis will keep us informed as to the outcome.• Necrology Committee: Diane Ochuba
Dr. Robert Huettner died. He was a lifetime member of the ODDS and a 1958 Creighton Dental graduate,• 2010-2011 Program and Activities: Dr. Joe Hurd
Dr. Ronald Attanasio, Director of TMD and Orofacial Pain Clinic at UNMC will speak at the May 10th meeting. His topic will be Dentistry and Sleep Disorders.
The golf outing announcement will go out this week.
Bring your dental assistant to dinner for the Nov 8th general meeting. Doctors will pay for the assistant, paying in advance to hold their reservations. Space will be limited, so it will be first come, first served, with a capacity of 175 max. Holly will check to see if we can have more than one screen.
We decided we want the Offutt residents’ program format like it was this year because it was a better way for them to prepare for Hinman. It was suggested that we provide a map and description of each presenter for next year’s meeting.4. Executive Director’s Report: Holly Herman
• We have a new sponsor for the May meeting: Dentsply.
• Holly has been contacted by Caresteam (Kodak), Voco America (Schein and Patterson have Voco America products). Any of those groups would speak if we wanted to do a half day team day, with an activity afterwards. Holly asked if these companies were reputable, and several board members vouched for their reputations.
• Signing Day at Creighton cost six hundred and something dollars. The NDA wrote a check for the grant money, and now they can get reimbursed from ADA.
• The block grant will pay for 16 students to play in the golf tournament. Holly has a waiting list of students who want to play. Holly will check with Lincoln district to see if they will help pay. Lincoln can submit names of UNMC student for block grant money. ADA didn’t pay for students golfing last year. Holly will contact the ADA to see if they will pay this year.
• It was suggested we use block grant money for a new member breakfast.
• Gary would like to have an ODDs CE and dinner for women dentists in Omaha area.
• Board members should complete Holly’s performance evaluation and turn it in by the first week of June. Give them to Scott.
• Holly is a member of an association of executive directors of dental societies, whose annual meeting is held in Chicago. She has paid her annual dues of $50, and would be interested in attending the annual meeting sometime. The executive committee will discuss it at the executive meeting.5 Old business

To encourage attendance at the NDA Annual Session held in April, there is no general membership meeting during this month.
- 2011 April Board of Directors Meeting
Omaha District Dental Society Board of Directors Meeting
April 5, 2011
Creighton School of Dentistry1. Welcome
• Dr. Scott Morrison opened the meeting at around 6:30 PM, and announced that we would try to start at 6:15 in the future.
• Scott congratulated Dr. Mark Latta on his appointment as the new dean of Creighton Dental School, and Dr. Latta was given a round of spontaneous applause.2. Officers’ Reports
• Secretary’s report: Dr. Kathy DeFord The meetings notes from the past Board of Directors and General Membership were read and accepted.• Treasurer’s report: Dr. Gary Westerman
See attached handout for details on treasurer’s report. Gary said more dues money was received from the NDA, but there is still some outstanding. Gary has included a new line item for the scholarship fund, taking in to account the oral surgeons’ donation.
We discussed an appropriate money reserve level. Right now we have about a 50% reserve (six months), which is what is suggested by the ADA. We might want to establish a financial policy as to how much to keep on hand. Gary will work on a policy statement on budget.• President’s report: Dr. Scott Morrison Scott discussed the NDA annual meeting.
The House of Delegates Meeting covered many of the usual issues, along with reports from members of the Mid-level provider task force, headed by Dr. Jack Wesch. Officers for the upcoming year were installed. The ODDS was well represented. Guest speaker for the Thursday night dinner was John Cook, volleyball coach at UNL. His speech was energetic and a good kick-off for the annual meeting. Suggestions were solicited for future kick-off speakers, with a recommendation of having someone enthusiastic, and not necessarily from the dental community. Seminars this year were good quality, well-presented.
Dr. Ken Hermsen, new NDA President, reported on the Oral Health Task Force, which will continue to be chaired by Dr. Jack Wesch. Ken complimented Jack on his efforts to bring together the dentists, hygienists and assistants to talk about what each group would like to see in a new dental provider or in an expansion of duties for existing providers. Assistants and hygienists would like to see expanding the scope of duties without adding a new provider. The hygienists on the task force are in favor of expanding the duties of dental assistants. The duties of dental assistants are not currently identified in statute. The task force would like to propose three levels of dental assisting: on-the-job trained assistant, CDA (certified dental assistant) and EFDA (expanded function dental assistant.) The committee needs to refine the proposal, and have a bill writer write a bill for legislature. Jack would also like to propose that all dental assistants be registered with the state. It would makes it more of a legislatively “defined profession”. Scott would like to discuss this issue within the ODDS, so we will build that into the May meeting.
Randy would like the dental profession to make the decisions about access to care problems instead of others outside the industry.ADA Delegate Report: Dr. Scott Morrison
• OSHA in New Jersey has determined assistants passing instruments (sharps) was against OSHA standards. North Carolina legislature has restricted whitening procedures to dental professionals. The Senate exempted dentistry from 1099 rule.
• In the Nebraska legislature, the ODDS testified in a neutral position to LB 330, which would enable hygienists to go into certain defined health care situations without the supervision of a dentist. Scott testified and spoke of the existing task force.• Douglas County Health Department: Dr. Stuart McNally
Chris Rogers, President of the National Association of County Commissioners (NACO)... (nacho) is in favor of instituting dental support for cards for Douglas County working poor. Patients pay a certain co-pay, and insurance would pay an amount from a fee schedule. It would be for those who do not qualify for Medicaid, and will be funded from sources outside Douglas County. Stuart was not sure where money would come from. One possibility would be the tobacco settlement fund for healthcare. The program would be similar to the Douglas County prescription card program. Stuart will ask Chris to come to board meeting to present and clarify the details of the program.• Community Service/Public Health: Dr. Scott Morrison reported for Dr. Marty Matz Nebraska Dental Home Initiative Meeting: Holly attended this meeting and reported there were about 75 representatives of health departments, etc. in attendance at the meeting. The goals of the group focus around increasing access to oral health care for young kids, from birth through five years old. The committee solutions revolved around dentists contributing more.
• Constitution and By-Laws Committee Report: Dr. Scott Morrison
It was suggested that the ODDS work in concert with the NDA’s by-laws revisions, but it was felt we have been working on revisions for too long and need to move forward and finish up.• Intra-Professional Advisory Committee: Dr. Dennis Anderson
Iowa Western has moved forward and organized two hygiene classes of 15 students each, one beginning in the fall and one in winter. The Top 15 students, academically will be in fall class because they were give first choice. The administration at Iowa Western wants the hygiene program to stop interviewing prospective students, but the hygiene people don’t want to, and feel it provides a good screening method. The hygiene program had to drop 11 hrs from its 96 hour program for financial reasons.• Necrology Committee: Dr. Diane Ochuba
Dr. Maurice Griffin, 1952 graduate of Creighton Dental died March 21st.3. Executive Director’s Report: Holly Herman
• May 10 meeting will be the last general meeting of year, and recognitions, thank you’s to volunteers, etc. will be presented at this meeting. Holly proposed holding the year-end meeting in March instead of May, which is a very busy month for families.
• Holly presented the proposed speaker list for next year. We will move the February 14th meeting to February 21st.
• Holly reported on Signing Day at Creighton Dental. It was well attended with 84+ students. There were 37 completed ADA applications, and 15 partial applications. Holly sent e-mail reminders to finish applications. The cost for the event is on the handout. We were one of the first two or so component societies to host a signing day. ADA sent pens and other freebies. The NDA [LDA?] will be holding a signing day in Lincoln on April 19th. Holly did a power point presentation about ODDS, and the NDA borrowed it. The UNMC event will use a “Sign up for our team” theme suggested by the ADA. Our theme focused on tips on beginning your dental career.
• The May meeting sponsor will be Dentsply, and they will donate $500 dollars.
• June golf tournament will be held 16th. The date on the website is wrong, and Holly will correct it.
• Holly will mail out the MODOL letters soon. It was suggested, MODOL label the envelopes with attn: office manager.
• In June we will have the executive committee meeting only.
• Holly distributed her performance evaluation and requested board member return it at the May meeting.4. Old Business
• We need to identify a recipient for the Ben Cutler award. Any suggestions should be given to Holly or Eric Hodges.
• Regarding the Board of Dentistry position, Dr. Dennis Anderson will apply, and attend NDA board meeting next time. Application has to be in by Aug 1st. His name will be announced at next general meeting in May. The ODDS board will unanimously endorse his application.5. New Business
• Holly mentioned a new ADA membership initiative. New dental school faculty members will receive 50% off their first membership.
• Dr. Gary Westerman suggested we should recognize Hall of Fame, 50 Year and Life members of the ODDS, at the next general membership meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 8:18 PM

• Peer Review Committee: Dr. Tom Keifer, chair of peer review committee, provided a brief overview of the peer review process. He said the process is a service to the public and to the ODDS. There are three members on the committee. The Peer Review Committee is listed in the Yellow Pages and the calls go to a voice mailbox which Tom checks daily and returns the calls. He then asks the caller to put the complaint in writing and fill in a form, which is forwarded to the dentist. The committee arbitrates about 20 cases a year, and four or five of those end up with a patient being examined by dentists. The goal is to avoid litigation.• Necrology Committee: A moment of silence was observed in honor of Dr. Marvin Simon’s passing.
• NMOM: Dr. Mark Frill announced the 2011 NMOM will be held in Grand Island on June 3-4. The NMOM committee has applied for possible CE credits to be awarded to those who volunteer their time, six CE credits for two days. The 2012 NMOM will be held in Columbus
• Community Dentistry: In the absence of Dr. Marty Matz, Dr. Scott Morrison reported about a letter the ODDS received in November 2010 from eight year old Brandon Carlson, asking for a donation of toothbrushes for Hope Totes to be donated to the Open Door Mission and Lydia House. Brandon visited our board meeting to tell us about his fund raising project. He made and sold 650 Christmas ornaments from Legos and used the money to made these totes to donate to the homeless children of Omaha. We donated the toothbrushes. This was the first time Brandon ever attended a board meeting and he did not know what to expect.
Volunteers are needed for Kidz Explore coming up February 19 & 20, Saturday and/or Sunday.
• Interdisciplinary Advisory Committee: Dr. Dennis Anderson announced next month’s scholarship awards to be presented to Hygiene and Dental Assisting students, and encouraged the membership to bring cash to donate to add to the scholarship amount. Last year we collected about $900 at the meeting, which averages to be about $10 per person in attendance.

Omaha District Dental Society
Board of Directors Meeting
January 5, 2011
Creighton University Dental School1.Welcome and Introductions
• Dr. Scott Morrison welcomes those in attendance to the new meeting location at Creighton Dental School. All agree the location will work well for our monthly meetings.2. Officer’s Reports
• Secretary - Dr. Kathy DeFord Minutes of the previous board meeting and general meeting (Nov 2 and 9) were reviewed and approved.•Trustee - Dr. Marty Matz was not in attendance due to his father’s ill health. There will be a trustee meeting Jan 21st at Wilderness Lodge, and Dr. Morrison will fill in for Dr. Matz. Dr. Morrison mentioned the contract with Harold Diers has not been finalized yet, but is in the works.
Treasurer’s Report - Dr. Gary Westerman
• As of Dec 30, 2010 Revenues were $20347.48 and expenditures were $39942.51. The adjusted fund balance is $54980.56. Gary hopes to receive dues money from the NDA soon.• New Members - There was a concern voiced that some new members of the ODDS were listed in the NDA newsletter, and the board had not reviewed their memberships. Gary will check into this.
•Dr. Donal Sheidell was approved as a transfer member from South Dakota with a handicapped membership. Donald used to work with the hygiene program in South Dakota, and now works in the Oral Diagnosis Department at Creighton Dental School.
•Retired members: Jim Smith and Gerald Haney applied for retired life memberships.
•Dr. Joe Hurd asked for feedback from the Board regarding updating the Bylaws to omit the need to vote in new members by written vote at General Membership meetings. The board wants applications submitted for approval at Board meetings, and then the new members will be presented to general membership as approved members. NDA and ADA both say we can’t deny any licensed member membership.President’s report - Dr. Scott Morrison
• The Holiday party went well, different but better overall. Attendance was up to 83, with a different mix of people. People enjoyed the band, The Burt Street Individuals (who consisted of one whole family) Although there were some concerns that those who preferred the former format would not attend, many of the core group of party attendees attended this year's event and reported that they had a good time.
• We received a thank you note from Senator Gwen Howard for donating toothbrushes to Neighbor’s United for people who are on the streets.
• We circulated a card for Board member Taryn Cheshire who will have a new baby girl tomorrow.Delegate Report - Dr. Scott Morrison
• The ADA has a new chief legal counsel J. Craig Busey
• The FDA is re-examining issues with amalgam problems. The ADA is involved in an advisory capacity.
• EPA will look at mandatory amalgam separators by 2012. Dr. Ken Hermsen will work with the NDA to provide information to Nebraska dentists about amalgam separators. We need to be proactive and go “green,” voluntarily using separators, rather than have it become mandatory. If we are proactive, we might not need legislative intervention. Many dental societies have endorsed the use of amalgam separators.
• Legislature: house and senate convened and state legislature convened today. Kathy Campbell is the new Health and Human Services chair, and we have previously established a good relationship with her. A small group will meet Friday Jan 7th to with several Nebraska legislators.
• Mike Brzika, JD was working at Lee Terry’s office, and now works for the EPA in Washington. It was suggested he address the general membership of the ODDS on EPA issues.
• State legislature: It’s all about the budget this year with the Nebraska legislature. Possible Medicaid cuts, eliminating adult Medicaid is a possibility. The NDA will lobby to keep adult Medicaid, to minimize the number of people who go to the ER which is a more expensive alternative to a dental extraction.
• The Nebraska Medical Association OK’d support of four issues: 1.Making breastfeeding in public legal, 2. Establishing a school program that tracks weights of kids over the years, 3. A provision eliminating soda pop and sugar drinks from the Snap program (food stamps) and 4. Eliminate the tax exemption on soda pop, so soda pop will be taxed.
• Scott said there might be a third party administrator for Medicaid.3. Committee Reports
• Peer Review Committee Dr. Tom Keifer, a past president of ODDS, and present Chairman of the Peer Review Committee presented an overview of the Peer Review process. Dr. Hoover started it, and presently Dr. Scott DiLorenzo and Dr. Dick Coke make up the committee. Peer Review is a service offered to the public and to ODDS members (although they would also help a non-member if requested.) The purpose of the review is to try to resolve conflicts without resorting to the court system. The number for the Peer Review is listed in Yellow Pages and are connected to a voicemail box. Tom checks it daily. Some older people are frustrated with a message, but the committee is unable to pay someone to answer the phone. Tom calls them back, and requests they put their complaint in writing and fill in a form. Tom calls the doctor and patient and they try to get the situation ironed out. About 20 complaints a year come back to Tom in written form. The committee examines about five patients a year. Generally the patient’s expectations exceed what can be done. Through the Peer Review process, patients can’t ask for their money back or administer punitive action. It’s a good service. Last year one significant incident occurred where Tom almost had to get a restraining order against a patient. That was the only incident of that type he had come across. Most patients and doctors grateful, and is a good service. There have been some incidents that have been beyond the scope of peer review and have gone on to the Nebraska Board of Dentistry. Tom said the most common situations are financial misunderstandings. It was suggested Tom do an occasional write up for the newsletter about situations that come up. Sometimes the Board of Dentistry does write-ups. Dr. Ken Hermsen gave a testimonial to Tom’s patience and fairness. Tom will present an overview of the peer review process at general meeting next week.
• Community Dentistry: We had a visit from eight year old Brandon Carlson, a third grader at Ezra Miller Elementary School (which was on lockdown today because of the shooting at Millard South High School), who raised money to put together hygiene bags for homeless children at the Open Door Mission and Lydia House. Brandon told about finding some Christmas Lego designs on line. He made ornaments and sold them to raise money for the Food Bank last year. This year, he made 650 ornaments and sold them at HyVee and on their website. The biggest order was for 12 ornaments. He used 26,000 Legos, sold 500 ornaments and made $2320.00. At the end of the month Brandon’s class is going to put together hygiene kits for kids that need them, kids who don’t have a home. This year they will proved 100 toddler totes, 150 for younger kids and 150 for older kids. Brandon gave each of us an ornament. Next year they plan to raise money for pajamas and fleece blankets for people at the Sienna Francis House and others shelters. Holly took pictures of Brandon and the ODDS presidency. Next year Brandon will make Star Wars and candy cane ornaments.
• Constitution and ByLaws Committee - Holly: ByLaws Committee will meet sometime after Marty’s father is better.
• Douglas County Board of Health Dr. Stuart McNally - Douglas County is being sued for copyright infringement of some swimming pool training, so that took up all the board of health time. No other news to report.
• Community Service/Public Health - Kidz Explore February 19 and 20 needs volunteers. Would like to get SouthWest Iowa more involved. There are two pedodontists in Council Bluffs and we will invite them to participate.
• Intra-Professional Advisory Committee - Dr. Dennis Anderson
- Holly: Next year it was suggested we have a “ Bring your dental assistant to the meeting” Meeting to make it less awkward than November’s shared meeting with the ODDS and dental assisting group. Maybe that night we could present dental assisting scholarships. There was a concern expressed about having enough space if the event is well attended. Maybe limit it to first so many that sign up, limit the number to number of seats we have. It was suggested we have State Dental Director Karyn Sorensen as a speaker, and offer the dental assisting group time to speak about the value of joining their assoc.
- Dennis Anderson reported that Iowa Western is continuing forward with plans to boost number of hygiene students to 30 per year for next three years (up from 18 per year now.) Creighton can give them two more chairs. Not enough off-site locations. They are discussing opening a free clinic at Iowa Western in 10 chairs there. They are also remodeling this year.
- Holly asked about the amount of money we will be awarding to scholarship recipients from Iowa Western and Metro. Next board meeting we need to know how much. Holly will see who scholarship recipients are. We will pass the hat again, and will announce it ahead of time so people will bring cash.• Necrology:
Dr. Marvin Simon passed away. He graduated from dental school at age of 21 and practiced for 50 years.• Nomination Committee:
Dr. Randy Nordstrom sent the following e-mail
“New Board members which will replace Dr’s. Latta and Wees this coming summer will be Dr’s. Stephanie Lake and Dr. Gene Gaspard. Dr. Stuart McNally, as our Douglas County Board of Health Dental Representative has agreed to serve for another term now as a full rather than as an ex-officio member. All other Exectutive positions are filled or slated. Delegates and Alternates were all contacted and published with 16 Delegates and 16 Alternates (which also have been published per Holly). My only other previous Agenda item references the 2011 Golf Tournament for June 16 @ Quarry Oaks. I had agreed to serve again as the Chairman for this Event in November. However, due to Family and Personal issues in this past two months; I have decided to ask to be replaced for this responsibility. I have every intention of playing and organizing a four-some to play but need to ask not to have any organizational responsibility for this event.
It is my intention to continue to strive to attend all meetings and will try to attend as many Monthly Board meetings as I am able. However, I will not be there tonight !”• 2010 - 2011 Program and Activities Committee Dr. Joe Hurd:
Joe announced the speakers for the January meeting - Dr. Jeffrey Markt will speak on Oncologic Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation in a Tertiary Care Center4. Executive Director’s Report
• We discussed the acceptability of the new location and agreed it will work out well.
• We decided to change the meeting time to 6 PM
• Holly asked about any food preferences and none were expressed. Holly will decide what light refreshments she will bring
• Holly reported on the Holiday Party, all agreeing that it was a great success and would like to do it again next year. We lost less money than in previous years, and the attendance was higher
• Metro Omaha Dental Office Leaders requested a table in January and wants to speak about office managers organization. They want to attach something to ODDS e-mails. The board agreed to allow the organization to put out flyers on a table, speak at a different month than January because we have so much business to cover, not attach anything to ODDS e-mails, and offer to publish something about their organization in the ODDS newsletter.
• Dr. Thomsen’s Find a Dentist presentation at last meeting was a little flat, didn’t go well as expected.
• North Omaha Voice requested ODDS set up some dental chairs in the library in North Omaha and do cleanings for adults and put on a puppet show for kids on February 19th from 9 AM to 4 PM. The board feels it would be unrealistic to set up to do cleanings, but we could offer to do dental screenings instead. Holly will contact them to see if they would like us to do this instead.5. Old business
• Holly would like our insurance reviewed to see if we need Director’s and Officer’s Liability Insurance. She was informed that non-profit organizations need to have this. Gary suggested we have someone come and talk to us about it. Stuart will have his brother, an insurance agent, look it over.6. New business
• The World Herald on Jan 3rd ran an article featuring the renovations at the VA clinic for Iraq returnees. There are 14 treatment rooms now and they have a contract with the GPR program at UNMC to work at VA.
• Board packets also contain a newsletter feature about Karyn Sorensen, the State Dental Health Director
• There is a new list of state dental shortage areas, which includes nearly every county except Douglas and Lancaster, and nearby counties. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 PM
Respectfully submitted, Kathy DeFord, DDS
