TREATING DENTAL PATIENTS WITH OPIOID AND OTHER SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

Presented by: Dr. John Massey & Dr. Todd Stull

Todd Stull, MD and John Massey, MD of the Nebraska Medical Association’s Project ECHO on Substance Use Disorders and Pain will provide three hours of training organized by the Omaha District Dental Society to satisfy the Nebraska Dental License renewal requirements for opioid continuing education. A majority of the training will focus on identifying patients with substance use disorders and determining a proper course of treatment in the dental setting, including proper prescribing patterns for such patients. 

Course Objectives:

• Identify opioid and other substance use disorders in patients
• Describe the neurobiology of addiction and its intersection with physical pain
• Describe the treatment methods for opioid and other substance use disorders and ow to prescribe for patients currently taking medications for opioid use disorder
• Adopt appropriate prescribing patters for patients with a history of substance use disorder, with a focus on opioid use disorder
• Review how to use the Nebraska PDMP to identify patients with a potential history of substance use disorder
