TREATING DENTAL PATIENTS WITH OPIOID AND OTHER SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS

Presented by: Dr. John Massey & Dr. Todd Stull

Todd Stull, MD and John Massey, MD of the Nebraska Medical Association’s Project ECHO on Substance Use Disorders and Pain will provide three hours of training organized by the Omaha District Dental Society to satisfy the Nebraska Dental License renewal requirements for opioid continuing education. A majority of the training will focus on identifying patients with substance use disorders and determining a proper course of treatment in the dental setting, including proper prescribing patterns for such patients. 

Course Objectives:

  • Identify opioid and other substance use disorders in patients
  • Describe the neurobiology of addiction and its intersection with physical pain
  • Describe the treatment methods for opioid and other substance use disorders and ow to prescribe for patients currently taking medications for opioid use disorder
  • Adopt appropriate prescribing patters for patients with a history of substance use disorder, with a focus on opioid use disorder
  • Review how to use the Nebraska PDMP to identify patients with a potential history of substance use disorder

3 CDE Hours will be awarded.

    Meet the Speakers:

    Dr. Todd Stull holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Nebraska Medical
    Center and is Board-Certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine. He has worked in a range of
    settings including private practice, academic, administrative and athletic.
    Much of Dr. Stull’s career has been dedicated to treating patients with substance use disorders.
    He has used pharmacotherapy, lifestyle medicine, and psychosocial approaches, and often
    combines treatment strategies. He has extensive experience treating opioid use disorders with
    Methadone, Buprenorphine and Naltrexone, and he has been a medical director of addiction
    treatment programs in academia and private practice.
    Dr. Stull was the first full-time sports psychiatrist in the NCAA where he served as the Senior
    Associate Athletic Director for Performance at the University of Nebraska in the Athletic
    Department. He is the Past President of the International Society for Sports Psychiatry. Dr. Stull
    has been involved in several NCAA workgroups to write guidelines for mental health, substance
    use, sleep, pain and sports wagering. He was one of 22 experts from six continents on the
    International Olympic Committee to write mental health and substance use guidelines.
    He is currently the director of the Nebraska Medical Association’s Integrated Healthcare Project

    where he works to support medical clinics integrating behavioral health services on site.


    Dr. John Massey has over 20 years of diverse experience, especially in pain management and
    treatment of chronic pain in Nebraska.
    Dr. Massey is focused on helping patients return to their normal lives by relieving pain with
    treatments such as epidural steroids, radio-frequency neurotomy for facet joint spondylosis,
    and kyphoplasty procedure for vertebral fractures.
    Furthermore, he also has extensive clinical experience with spinal cord stimulation and has
    taught this procedure to other pain specialists on a national level. Dr. Massey is an adjunct
    faculty member of the UNMC Department of Family Medicine and has taught residents and
    medical students in this capacity.
    Working to better the industry of pain management, Dr. John Massey is the Task Force Chair of
    the Nebraska HHS Pain Guidance Document working group which has recently published pain
    guidelines for all state clinicians via a CDC grant.
    John is married to his wife Julie. They have three grown children; Katie, Libby, and Ben. He
    enjoys golf, piano and playing with his German Shepherd, Gabby.
    Dr. Massey is also Board Certified as an Independent Medical Examiner. In addition, he is a
    Lieutenant Colonel in the Nebraska Air National Guard in the 155th Air Refueling Wing Medical.
